The Famous Phallus, “one” of only a handful of pieces ever produced, for Studio Alchimia, 1981. The Phallus, finished in Salmon colored pink plastic laminate, and mirror on both sides, with power outlet lighting, was Ettore Sottsassʼs proverbial way of placing a Penis on the table of the modern design community. Exposed to the world at the 1981 Milan Furniture Fair, Memphis (the iconoclastic Milan-based design collective spearheaded by Sottsass) mesmerized and appalled the international design community in equal parts, with itʼs garishness of usually gaudy, high-low mix of colors and star-crossed materials (like plastic laminate and marble, as asymmetrical as the crazed suburban furnishings seen in a 60ʼs Looney Tune cartoon. |
